ABOUT

My name is Joe Lee Hansley and I’m a native of Hazlehurst, GA which is a small town located in Jeff Davis county.  After graduating high school in 2001, I enlisted into the U.S. Navy to proudly serve my country.  During my service in the military, I completed over 10 deployments in which I’ve encountered life changing experiences that made a huge impact on my life.  Inspired by great mentorships from my military peers that encouraged me to strive for my goals regardless of the obstacles I may face, I wanted to give back to those in needs.  Upon completing 15 years of service in the military, I retired under an honorable medical release. In 2005, I created The Joe Lee Hansley Foundation (JLHF).  JLHF is an organization that primarily targets low-income youth with purpose of promoting educational and professional success. Our goal is to increase academic and professional success through our mentoring program as well as teaching the necessary life skills.

Community Involvement

For the last 3 years, JLHF has partnered with the City of Portsmouth, VA parks and recreation department to host a toy drive for Christmas which provided over 200 low income families with a brighter holiday experience. For more than 5 years, JLHF has also worked with local charities and nonprofits in the area to host a back to school giveaway, which supplied pencils, paper, folders and resources for the last 5 years.  Also, our organization has benefited Thanksgiving celebrations for more than 1500 people over the past 3 years.  The Thanksgiving food giveaway yielded 2000 pounds of food for citizens in need within the city of Portsmouth.

Scholarships

The JLHF scholarship foundation has been established since 2005 in which educational funding has given to qualifying high school graduates.   Students that successfully graduate high school and plan to enroll in the military or college can qualify as a scholarship recipient.  Since the creation of the JHFL foundation, more than $120,000 have been distributed to more than 50 scholarship winners.  The scholarship amounts vary from $100 to $1000.  Donations and other contributions are happily appreciated by contacting the JLHF organization.
